Mrs. Magelene D. Segrest of Slocomb passed away Sunday, August 9, 2015 at her home.  She was 85. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2015 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Slocomb with Rev. Larry Newton and Chaplain Eddie Bliss officiating.  Interment will follow in the Slocomb City Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Magelene's memory with  contributions to the Slocomb City Rescue Squad or to Gentiva Hospice, 2740 Headland Ave, Dothan, AL 36303. 

Magelene, affectionately referred to as "MeMe" by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born August 31, 1929 in Slocomb to the late Slocum and Mellie Greer Deal.  As a selfless civil servant, Magelene was the first women elected to the Slocomb City Council and proudly served the citizens of Slocomb for many years until her recent retirement. She served on many boards, including the Slocomb Library Board and the Slocomb Senior Citizens Center Board. In addition, she was a leader of the local and state migrant program.  Magelene, along with her husband Marx and a few others,  were instrumental in the formation of the city’s first rescue squad. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed. 

In addition to her parents, her husband, Edwin Marx Segrest and one brother, Paul Deal preceded her in death. 

Survivors include one daughter, Paula Segrest, Slocomb; two sons: Johnny Segrest ( Rhonda), Fadette and Charles Edwin "Chuck" Segrest (Cheri), Dothan; granchildren: Zach Segrest (Amanda Brooke), Dustin Segrest, Anna Brooke Rachel, Kalid Segrest (Dixie), Matt Segrest and Tristian Segrest; great grandchildren: Georgia, Ayden, Wallis, Palmer and Abygail; sister-in-law, Starr Clem, Birmingham; nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends. 

 

Pallbearers will be Fred Holster, Wayne Chancellor, Henly Hicks, Greg Vann, Rob Hinson, Joe Miles, Fred Peterson and Michael Szczekot.
