John Earnest Helms

Mr. John Earnest Helms of Slocomb passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at his home. He was 61.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb with Rev. Tony Wood officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. and continuing until service time.

Mr. Helms was born May 31,1962 in Dothan to the Huey Helms and Nina Sue Butler Helms.  John got the nickname “Rooster” as a child from eating popcorn out of a slop bucket. Even as a small child he loved looking for treasures, in the garbage, by the road, and thrift store. He was a fun loving, kind and compassionate man. John was always willing to lend a hand to help anyone who needed it. He loved his family dearly.

He was preceded in death by his father, Huey Helms.

Survivors include his wife, Dora (Kay) Helms; daughter, Mary Kaitlyn Helms (Katy); sons: Chad Earnest Helms and John Travis Helms; mother, Sue Helms; grandchildren: Hannah Kay Helms, Jon Sebastian Helms, and Emma Helms; siblings: Brenda Sue Helms, Janet Lynn Thomas (Robert), and Terry Glenn Bolin (Julie); nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
