Flora Nell Sammons Eaddy

July 18, 1935 — January 19, 2014

Mrs. Flora Nell Sammons Eaddy a longtime resident of Hartford, Alabama, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, January 19, 2014, at the age of 78.

Funeral services will be held at Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church in Dothan on Friday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m.  Elder Rodney Stewart and Elder Paul Evans will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing.

The family will receive friends at the church on Friday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time.

Mrs. Eaddy is survived by her husband of 59 years, William J. Eaddy; son, David William Eaddy; adopted son Patrick Eaddy; nephews: Alan Blackshear, Stanley Sammons, Daniel Sammons, Jeff Sammons and their families; niece, Jeanne Sasser and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cloyd and Sarah Sammons; brother, William Sammons and his wife, Hazel; brother, Chaphim Sammons and sister, Cloyce Blackshear and her husband, John.

Mrs. Eaddy served in many different positions with the US Department of Agriculture over a period of 42 years. Thirty-seven years were spent in the Houston County USDA office. For the remaining five years, she served as Peanut and Tobacco Specialist for the State of Alabama USDA office in Montgomery. She traveled to Kansas City frequently to test the peanut software used by all peanut states and traveled to Washington to help write instructions for county offices to regulate the peanut program. The Peanut Division in Washington also requested that she serve on a national committee to coordinate policy on peanuts and tobacco. Having been reared on a farm herself, her deep desire was to help the farmers on the local and national level in every way possible.

An active member of Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church for over 60 years, she served as church clerk and treasurer for many years. She has an enduring personality which made friends easily wherever she went. One of her greatest gifts was hospitality and she loved to help others. Her strong leadership skills were always tempered by her terrific sense of humor.

Pallbearers will be Christopher Grimes, Birdie Bond, Dan Sammons, Jeff Sammons, William Sasser and Stanley Tindell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Little Vine Baptist Church or the charity of choice.
