Edsel Buchanan Smith

May 4, 1928 — September 22, 2017

Mr. Edsel Buchanan Smith of Hartford went home to be with the LORD, Friday, September 22, 2017 at SAMC.  He was 89.  Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Slocomb with Rev. David Williams and Rev. Brad Price officiating.  Interment will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing.   The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Slocomb from 2:00 p.m. until service time.  The family requests that you honor Edsel's memory with your contribution to the First Baptist Church of Slocomb Youth Program or Building Fund, P.O. Box 428, Slocomb, AL 36375.  Mr. Smith was born May 1, 1928 in Geneva County to the late Edgar and Bertie Seay Smith.  Edsel lived his early years in Geneva County.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served honorably during the Korean Conflict.  Edsel, along with his  family, later moved to Warner Robins, GA where he was employed with the United States Postal Service for 30 years. After his retirement, he moved back to the family home in Alabama. Edsel loved his family, extended family, church family and his neighbors and he will be profoundly missed.  In addition to his parents, a daughter, Rhonda Toms, granddaughter, Morgan Toms; sisters: Gladys Cox (Raymond), Edna Marsh (Gerel), Carmie Hall (Dick), Agnes Smith and Nell Smith; brother, Royce R. Smith all preceded him in death.  Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, who for the last nine years has been his caretaker and nurse, Mae Nell Stokes Smith, daughter, Roya Alford (Bill); three grandsons: Will Alford (Beth), Tyler Alford (Kara) and Christopher Toms; brother, Glen Smith; special nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and other extended family and friends.
