Mrs. Melba Grace Smith of Slocomb went home to be with her LORD Sunday, April 14, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was 78. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Juston Carpenter officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. 

Flowers will be accepted or contributions in Mrs. Smith’s memory may be made to Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, 2075 County Road 9, Slocomb, AL 36375. 

Mrs. Smith was born July 2, 1945 in Geneva County to the late W.C and Elvie May Kirkland Lassiter. Mrs. Smith was saved as a teenager and served in her church in numerous capacities. Melba was able to teach her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren along with many others over the years about the Lord. She retired from the Geneva County Child Nutrition Program.  She enjoyed reading and studying her bible, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and shopping with her best friend, Ruby Hagler. Mrs. Smith loved taking care of her family and others in need. She will be dearly missed. 

In addition to her parents, siblings: Estelle Sawyer, Lewis Lassiter, Sybil Holton, Sheila Mitchell, Larry Lassiter, Rex Lassiter, son-in-law, Johnny K. Cumbie who she loved like a son, all preceded her in death. 

Survivors include her devoted husband, James A. Smith; daughters: Laura Crawford (Kyle), and Leah Cumbie; grandchildren: Kara Ezell (Drew), Radney Crawford (Carolyn), Hannah Crosby, Haley Crosby; great grandchildren: Evie Ezell, Emma Crawford, Elijah Crawford, Lilah Crawford, and Ethan Ezell; siblings: Lounell Baxley, Debra Fowler, Pete Lassiter, and Ricky Lassiter; sisters-in-law: Gail Lassiter, and Diana Lassiter; brother-in-law, Lamar Holton; special friend of 75 years, Ruby Hagler; several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
